A Kleinburg resident asked members of council to vote for a judicial review into Councillor Peter Meffe’s alleged conflict of interest.
Last week Richard Lorello filed a motion, which will be heard by the court in January, alleging that as city councillor and as president of the Vaughan-based company Gridd Electric, Meffe had failed to adhere to the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.
The affidavit points to occasions where Meffe did not declare an interest and voted on matters and applications that were presented before council by development companies that do business with Gridd.
In an email this week, Lorello asked members of council to “seriously consider the need for a judicial review into this matter and any matters relating to these allegations.”
He urged council to act swiftly.
“In the interest of transparency and accountability, I believe that Vaughan council must face this matter head on, without delay and without fear.”
Should council vote in favour of the review, the process would entail asking a court to rule on the appropriateness of Meffe’s decisions.
Meffe’s office is not commenting on the allegations, saying only that he’s consulted legal counsel and will take the appropriate action.
Mayor Linda Jackson said she was unable to comment on the matter as she is still dealing with conflict of interest allegations made against her in 2007.
