Parents, guardians and community organizations in Vaughan will have an opportunity to learn more about legal issues affecting young people at an upcoming educational event focused on youth justice, liability, insurance and family responsibilities.
Leaders Lounge will host The Law, You & Your Kids on September 30 at Venu Event Space in Vaughan. The three-hour community event is intended to give families practical information about situations that can unexpectedly lead to legal or financial consequences.
Organizers say the program is designed to address questions that families may not consider until an incident occurs, including what happens when a teenager is involved in a car accident, when parents could face liability and how criminal, personal injury or insurance matters can affect young people.
Legal Education Focuses on Issues Families Could Face
The event will bring legal professionals together for an accessible discussion of real-world scenarios involving teenagers, young adults and their families.
Topics are expected to include youth justice, criminal law, personal injury, insurance, parental responsibilities and potential liabilities. Organizers have emphasized that information presented during the event is intended for educational purposes only rather than individualized legal advice.
E-scooter use is among the examples highlighted by organizers as an area where families should understand the rules affecting younger riders.
“In Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old to legally operate an e-scooter. Because of this, any youth under 16 caught riding an e-scooter is automatically operating it illegally.”
“Violations of Ontario’s provincial e-scooter pilot program carry hefty fines ranging from $250 to $2,500.”
The release also highlighted possible consequences for parents and young riders.
“York Regional Police routinely warn families that parents can be fined for knowingly allowing a child under 16 to operate e scooters. Furthermore, tickets issued under the Motor Vehicle Act can appear on a minor’s future driving record.”

The event is being promoted particularly to parents and guardians of teenagers and young adults, including families with children between the ages of 13 and 25.
