NEWMARKET, Ontario, Oct. 9, 2026 — Dr. Karen Kozma, a physics and computer science teacher at Pickering College in Newmarket, Ontario, has been recognized with a 2026 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM, honouring her contributions to innovative education, robotics mentorship and student development.
The national award recognizes elementary and secondary school educators who demonstrate excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) instruction while preparing students for careers in Canada’s increasingly technology-driven economy.
Kozma, a professional engineer with a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering, has developed a teaching approach that combines academic instruction with practical engineering challenges, programming and industry-standard technologies.
Innovative STEM Teaching Focuses on Practical Learning
Kozma’s teaching philosophy emphasizes experimentation, critical thinking and creating opportunities for students to learn through challenges and setbacks.
Her classroom instruction connects theoretical concepts with practical applications, encouraging students to explore emerging technologies and develop confidence in solving complex problems.
“I am humbled to receive this award. For me, teaching has always been about creating learning experiences that are challenging, inspiring and meaningful. Seeing the lightbulb go off, watching students discover what they are capable of and seeing them find a passion for STEM makes it all worthwhile,” said Kozma. “I am grateful to FIRST Robotics Canada for the nomination and to the students and colleagues at Holy Name of Mary College School who have been part of my teaching career. I look forward to continuing this work at Pickering College.”
Kozma joined Pickering College in September 2026, bringing extensive experience in STEM education and extracurricular robotics programs.
Robotics Mentorship Expands Opportunities for Students
Leadership in FIRST Robotics Competitions
Beyond classroom instruction, Kozma has played a significant role in expanding student participation in competitive robotics.
She founded FIRST Robotics Competition Team 7659, an all-girls robotics team that expanded from two founding participants to more than 50 students annually.
Under her mentorship, the team received several provincial and district honours, including the Engineering Inspiration Award, Sustainability Award and Rookie All-Star Award.
Her work has also supported opportunities for female students to gain experience in engineering, technology and collaborative problem-solving.
Kozma currently contributes her expertise to Newbotics 8349, a community-based FIRST Robotics Competition team comprising high school students from Newmarket and surrounding communities.
Based at Pickering College, Newbotics 8349 won the Technology Division title and finished runner-up at the 2026 Ontario District Provincial FIRST Robotics Finals. The team is preparing for the 2026–27 competition season.
Pickering College Recognizes Kozma’s Educational Leadership
Pickering College administrators highlighted Kozma’s ability to combine demanding academic expectations with encouragement and individualized student support.
“Karen has an extraordinary ability to see potential in students and then give them the confidence, skills and opportunities to realize it,” said Dr. Cinde Lock, Head of School at Pickering College. “Her students learn that they belong in STEM, that their ideas matter and that they have the ability to make a difference. This award is a wonderful reflection of the impact she has had on her students.”
Joshua Armstrong, the school’s Director of Teaching and Learning, also emphasized the importance of curiosity, persistence and practical experimentation in Kozma’s approach.
“Karen’s teaching is a great example of what happens when academic rigour is paired with purpose, curiosity and a genuine belief in students,” said Joshua Armstrong, Director of Teaching and Learning at Pickering College. “She creates a classroom environment where students can ask difficult questions, test ideas, learn from setbacks and keep going. She challenges them to think deeply while giving them the support and feedback they need to grow.”
2026 Prime Minister’s Awards Honour 60 Canadian Educators
National Recognition for Excellence in Education
The 2026 Prime Minister’s Awards recognize 60 educators across Canada in three categories: Teaching Excellence, Teaching Excellence in STEM and Excellence in Early Childhood Education.
Established in 1994 and administered by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, the awards recognize educators whose work strengthens student achievement, digital literacy and innovative teaching practices.
Recipients are selected through a national volunteer review process, with regional and national honours presented across the three categories.
Founded in 1842, Pickering College is an independent day and boarding school serving students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Located in Newmarket since 1909, the institution is a member of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network.
Kozma’s recognition highlights the role of hands-on STEM education and robotics mentorship in developing technical capabilities, encouraging student participation and supporting Canada’s future innovation workforce.
