Having good dexterity is crucial for everyone because it enables the hands and fingers to move precisely and effectively. This is required for many daily activities like writing, typing, and cooking. Some people with superior fine motor control can even perform tasks like using sensitive machinery, performing surgeries, and playing musical instruments.

There are various ways that you can improve your dexterity, many of which are scientifically proven. By practicing a few simple tricks for a short amount of time each day, you may find that your hand coordination skills improve massively.

    Playing Video Games

There are loads of great benefits to playing video games, and with the training gives your hands up there with the best of them. There have been numerous studies into how gaming can lead to improved dexterity, with one of the most famous pieces of research presented at the 2008 American Psychological Association. It discovered that playing video games could be advantageous to surgeons who want to improve their fine motor control to give them a better chance of performing intricate operations.

According to Dr. Praveen Kadimcherla, the best surgeons in the world are likely to handle joysticks and gaming pads just as often as they pick up scalpels and surgical scissors. This is because games can improve hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and problem-solving – all vital tools for a surgeon to have in their arsenal.

    Shuffling Poker Chips

If you’ve ever watched a televised poker game, you’ll have noticed that it’s always accompanied by the familiar clicking sound of chips. Nearly every professional poker player out there has learnt how to masterfully shuffle their chips with one hand. This can be done as a form of relaxation, or to help players focus while they deliberate their potential moves. There’s no doubt that the act requires high levels of dexterity, and it can take some time to perfect.

For anyone interested in mastering the art of chip shuffling, it’s important to get the right casino chips. Modern chips are made from a combination of clay and more durable materials, which are compression moulded. Some of the biggest manufacturers include Gaming Partners International and GTI Gaming. The chips feel heavier than they look, and it can be satisfying when you nail the shuffling method.

    Resistance Exercises

There are several types of resistance exercises that can be used to improve dexterity. One of the best is to practice grip strength. This focuses on strengthening the muscles in the hand, wrist, and forearm that are responsible for gripping. To do this, you could opt to squeeze a hand gripper regularly while you sit in your office chair at work. Alternatively, you could use a resistance band to perform wrist curls or extensions.

It’s clear that there are plenty of ways to improve dexterity that can be done at any time and are fun. Working on this skill now could be beneficial later in life, as it will mean that you can always perform tasks that require fine motor skills.
