    (Bogota) Une espèce de requin à dents plates,  vivant il y a des millions d’années, a été identifiée pour la première fois dans le nord-est de la Colombie grâce à l’analyse de nombreux fossiles, a indiqué à l’AFP l’un des chercheurs chargé de cette découverte.

    Ces fossiles de l’espèce baptisée « Strophodus rebecae » ont été découverts à Zapatoca, à environ 250 km au nord de Bogota.

    Les études révèlent qu’il vivait il y a 135 millions d’années dans cette partie alors immergée du continent sud-américain.

    Il mesurait entre quatre et cinq mètres de longueur et avait des dents semblables à des dominos, qui servaient à écraser la nourriture plutôt qu’à couper et à déchirer comme pour les requins actuels aux dents acérées, selon les paléontologues.

    Edwin Cadena, de l’université de Rosario à Bogota, et Jorge Carrillo, de l’université de Zurich en Suisse, ont travaillé pendant près de dix ans dans la région sur cette découverte.

    « Il existe de nombreux individus, des fossiles trouvés à différents endroits de la région de Zapatoca, dont nous sommes sûrs qu’ils appartiennent à la même espèce », a expliqué M. Cadena.

    Il s’agit également de la première trace d’un poisson de la famille des Strophodus dans l’hémisphère Sud de la planète, appelée Gondwana, qui était alors composée de l’Amérique du Sud, de l’Afrique, de l’Australie, de l’Inde et de l’Antarctique.

    « Il existe des traces du même genre en Amérique du Nord et en Europe, en particulier en Allemagne et en Suisse […] But this is the first group of all this group of sharks for the southern part of the planet at this time,” Cadena said in detail.

    In the sea at the time, “It is very likely that these sharks had an important ecological role because, with their teeth, they could crush prey such as fish, but also invertebrates, and at the same time, they were prey to large reptiles. That were in this environment, resulting in to the establishment of ecological control of the ecosystem”, according to Mr. Kadena.

    The fossils belong to the University of Rosario’s fossil collection. A museum for their exhibition is being built in Zapatoka.

    Scientific Journal berg The Columbian study was published.

    In 2020 Mr. Cadena discovered the country’s first pterosaur fossils, a flying reptile from the Mesozoic era (between 251 million and 65.5 million years BC) made famous by Jurassic Park.
