As senior science and technology advisor, Mayer will advise the Attorney General and collaborate with various departments within the Department of Justice on complex technical issues, such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, according to the release.
Mayer, who has a background in computer science and law, focused on criminal procedure, national security and consumer protection, the statement said. He is an assistant professor at Princeton UniversityDepartment of Computer Science and School of Public and International Affairs.

Meyer will also lead the development of a team of experts in technology-related fields, including cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, to advise leadership and coordinate efforts across the department and with federal partners, according to the release.
In addition to his role as Chief Science and Technology Advisor, Mayer has also been appointed Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, in keeping with the President's Executive Order on… Develop and use artificial intelligence in a safe, secure and trustworthy mannerThe statement said.
In this capacity, Mayer will lead efforts to advance intradepartmental and cross-agency initiatives on artificial intelligence and related issues, according to the release. He will also chair the newly created Emerging Technology Council, which oversees and governs the use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies within the Department of Justice.
President Joe Biden signed an executive order on AI in October, establishing an early set of guidelines and regulations for the use of AI that could be further strengthened through legislative action and international agreements.
In his remarks before signing the order, Biden said: “Artificial intelligence is all around us. To realize the promise of AI and avoid the risks, we need to control this technology.
