Adults and children need to have a good oral health plan for themselves. Dentists can provide one and you can also create an effective one for yourself. Click here to find out more about this.

Caring for your teeth and mouth is paramount to a healthy lifestyle. It is more than just having a nice smile and maintaining good oral health should be one of the priorities in your life. Many people go to the gym, eat healthily and drink loads of water, as recommended by health care professionals.

However, when it comes to oral health they seem to skip this part. Advice from North York dentists is to make sure you not only visit your dentist regularly to get check-ups and cleanup but also get into the habit of abiding by a personal oral plan for yourself.

Developing a personalised plan is not that difficult, and with the below tips and suggestions you should be on your way to a great start to keep your teeth pearly white and ready for action.

    Brushing and Flossing

To comprise a good oral health plan, brushing your whole mouth and flossing need to be a regular part of it. If you do not stick to the routine regularly you risk your teeth getting damaged, and worse, falling out. Tooth decay and gum disease are some of the main causes of not looking after your teeth properly and this can lead to a whole other list of unfavourable consequences such as :

    • Abscesses and infections
    • Pain and discomfort
    • Diabetes complications
    • Difficultieseating, talking or socialising
    • Cardiovascular effects
    • Time away from school or work
    • Respiratory infections
    • Negative effects on unborn babies
    • Infection that can spread beyond the jaw
    • Teeth falling out
    • Frequent unnecessary visits to the dentist to get things fixed

What’s Included in a Good Oral Plan

If the list in the above section scares you, you should consider developing a good oral plan for yourself. There are a few things that can help you with this to avoid any risk of developing periodontal or any other diseases. The Canadian Dental Association states that only 3 in 4 people will brush their teeth properly or floss regularly.

Here are a few things you can do:

    1. Check your entire mouth once or twice a week to see any inconsistencies. If you notice anything out of place, visit your dentist immediately
    2. Spend a few minutes flossing daily from the front to the back of your mouth for a few minutes
    3. Only use water, mouthwash or fluoride toothpaste to clean your mouth
    4. Removing any plaque build-up by brushing your teeth for a minimum of 2 minutes every session, morning and evening
    5. Only indulge in foods and drinks that have minimal to no sugar in them
    6. Do not chew substances such as tobacco or smoke cigarettes
    7. Speak to your oral health care professional if your not sure where to start or how to develop a plan, especially if you are pregnant or suffer from diabetes

Besides the above information always make sure you make time to look after yourself and eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins and essential nutrients to keep your bones strong.
