« Tout ce que j’ai dit […]“It is my opinion and my personal conviction,” Alexei Gourinov insisted on Tuesday at the start of his trial: “If something does not seem right to me, then I say so, that’s it.”

He also said he opposes the description of “political hatred” with which he is accused. He looked fit, in a blue T-shirt, and made jokes about his life in prison.

Prosecution witnesses were heard, on Tuesday, behind closed doors at the request of the prosecution, claiming that they were subjected to “psychological pressure” from those around the accused. The trial is scheduled to resume on July 7.

His lawyer, Ekaterina Tertukhina, denounced the “too swift” investigation and lack of evidence. “I haven’t seen anything that proves the guilt,” she told reporters after the hearing.

Amnesty International, a non-governmental organization, called for his immediate release, denouncing a “high-profile trial” aimed at sending a “deterrent message”.

Since February 24, dozens of people who openly criticized the conflict have been tried in Russia. Most have been fined, but others face harsh prison sentences.
