BARCELONA — At Mobile World Congress 2026, Motorola formally unveiled its first book-style foldable smartphone, expanding beyond its familiar clamshell Razr lineup. After a brief teaser at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, the company is now sharing full details — and early impressions suggest it’s aiming squarely at heavyweights like Samsung and Google in the premium foldable market.
The new Motorola Razr Fold stands out for one headline feature: exceptionally bright displays on both the inside and outside screens.
Two Ultra-Bright Screens Set a New Benchmark
Motorola says the Razr Fold’s 8.1-inch internal display reaches a peak brightness of 6,200 nits. The external screen nearly matches it at 6,000 nits. For context, leading competitors such as the Pixel 10 Fold Pro top out around 3,000 nits. In practical terms, that means improved visibility outdoors — even under direct sunlight.
During hands-on time in a sunlit demo space in Barcelona, both screens remained easy to read.
Display Specs and Performance
The main screen features a 2K LTPO panel with a resolution of 2,484 x 2,232 and a peak refresh rate of 120Hz. The outer display offers a 2,520 x 1,080 resolution and can reach up to 165Hz. Both screens support Dolby Vision for enhanced HDR video playback — a feature likely to appeal to users who stream high-resolution content from services like Netflix and Disney+.
Bigger Battery, Slim Design
Powering those bright displays is a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, one of the largest currently available in a foldable phone. Silicon-carbon technology allows for greater energy density, helping Motorola maintain a relatively slim profile.
The device measures 4.6mm thick when unfolded and 9.9mm when closed. While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 is slightly thinner, it carries a significantly smaller 4,400mAh battery.
Fast charging is supported at up to 80W using Motorola’s TurboPower charger (sold separately), along with 50W wireless charging.
Battery life remains an open question given the brightness levels and large displays, but the capacity suggests Motorola is prioritizing endurance — a frequent concern among foldable buyers.
Flagship Performance With Snapdragon 8 Gen 5
Under the hood, the Razr Fold runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, the current flagship Android chipset. Motorola has also added a liquid-cooling system designed to maintain performance during gaming and other demanding tasks.
The device will support Motorola’s new Moto Pen Ultra stylus, expanding productivity options and positioning the Razr Fold as a potential competitor to productivity-focused foldables in the U.S. market.
Five Cameras, Including a 50MP Periscope Telephoto
Motorola has equipped the Razr Fold with a total of five cameras — a notable step up from past Razr models, which have sometimes lagged behind competitors in photography performance.
Rear Cameras
- 50MP main sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization
- 50MP ultrawide lens with a 122-degree field of view and macro support
- 50MP periscope telephoto camera offering 3x optical zoom and up to 100x “SuperZoom” via AI-enhanced processing
The main camera also works with a multi-spectral 3-in-1 light sensor to improve color accuracy.
In early testing, the telephoto results were particularly strong, delivering sharp images at moderate zoom levels.
Selfie Cameras
The device includes:
- A 32MP internal front-facing camera capable of recording 4K video
- A 20MP external selfie camera
Both use f/2.4 lenses.
Motorola claims the Razr Fold currently holds the highest DXOMARK score among foldable smartphones. DXOMARK, a France-based testing lab, evaluates camera performance using standardized image quality benchmarks.
It remains to be seen how the Razr Fold compares directly with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in real-world U.S. testing, but on paper, Motorola appears to be taking photography more seriously than in previous Razr releases.
Design and Finish
The Razr Fold carries forward several design cues from recent Razr models. A “Blackened Blue” version features a woven piqué texture designed to improve grip and resist fingerprints. A Lily White option offers a satin finish without the textured pattern.
Despite the larger form factor and battery, the device feels surprisingly slim and balanced in hand.
Availability in North America
Motorola has not yet announced U.S. pricing or an exact release date. The company says the Razr Fold will launch in North America “in the coming months.”
With brighter displays, a larger battery, upgraded cameras and flagship performance, the Motorola Razr Fold represents the company’s most ambitious foldable yet. Whether it can compete head-to-head with established players in the U.S. market will depend on pricing, carrier partnerships and real-world performance — but on first impression, Motorola is clearly aiming high.
