Officials confirmed Saturday evening that the Santa Clara County Police Department and Milpitas Police are at a shooting site at the Great Mall in Milpitas.

Police said in a tweet on Twitter that all shops were asked to take shelter and advised people to avoid the area.

MPD is currently investigating a shooting incident at Great Mall. Out of extreme caution, we required all stores to take cover while officers continued to assess the situation. Please keep out of the region and we’ll provide additional updates soon.

“Search teams are systematically searching all stores that were protecting in place, and will escort employees and customers to the parking lot,” Milpitas Police said in a tweet. “The officers and investigators are still on site and are actively investigating this incident.”

Witness Angelo Palma said he and a friend were coming from a church meeting when they decided to stop by the mall. He said they were in Colombia when they saw people running.

“We started running,” Palma said. “Everyone starts running. Shooting, everyone just started running. People were running forward, people were running back. People were falling. It was frantic.”

No other information is immediately available. This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
