Virginia State Police confirmed that a 19-year-old man involved in a collision in Pulaski died after his car veered off the side of the freeway, crashed into a bridge and capsized.
Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told CNN that Pranagan K. Leclerc was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. Geller added that he believed slippery road conditions were a factor in the cause of the accident.
In Pennsylvania, where the storm caused heavy snowfall for hours, two people were killed and several others injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving 30 to 60 vehicles on Interstate 80 in Clinton County, according to authorities.
There was more than six inches of snow and sleet early Thursday morning, the service said at Central Park in New York City.
On Wednesday, heavy snowfall caused a pile-up of 27 vehicles, what officials call a chain reaction event, on the Henry Hudson Bridge, NYPD Lieutenant Thomas Anthony told CNN. Antoniti added that there were no serious injuries.
Six people have been taken to area hospitals with their injuries, according to CNN’s WABC.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that all school buildings will be closed on Thursday and personal learning has been canceled.
There was just no snow
But the storm didn’t just get rid of the snow. Jay said that strong winds – from about 55 to 65 mph – from Delaware to New Jersey caused minor damage. Jay said the coast would likely continue to feel strong winds from New Jersey through Massachusetts throughout Thursday, with potential coastal flooding in Delaware via New Jersey.
“The heavy snow will continue as the storm approaches to the northeast, and heavy snowfall will leave the area in the late afternoon – early evening,” he added.
Jay said the southern portion of the system also pushed a cold front across central Florida on Wednesday, triggering several hurricanes across Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
Judd said that the deputies arrived in the area and found “significant damage in two streets,” adding that two homes appeared to be “uninhabitable at this stage.”
“There is significant damage to trees and other homes in the area,” Al-Sharif said. “We started going from door to door … to check the safety of security and to make sure that there were no casualties.”
Al-Sharif said they had not received any reports of injuries “despite the significant damage.”
